Just in case anyone didn't know about this yet, this is a quote from a message sent directly to me from one of the official BioMods on BioWare's NWN Forums, in regards to questions I had about Parry :

And I quote:

parry is completely broken.

each 6 second combat round is broken into 3 * two second phases (observable as distinct attack animation "flurries". )

if someone has more than 3 attacks, they have multiple attacks in one or more of the phases.

say someone has 5 attacks, those attacks are broken into:

phase 1:
attack 1
attack 2

phase 2:
attack 3
attack 4

phase 3:
attack 5

parry is broken in that you will only attempt to parry 1 attack per combat phase.

so if your character also has 5 attacks, and that person in the example attacks you, your character would never even attempt to parry attack 2 or attack 4.

parry isn't worth spending a single skill point on until it gets fixed.

there's no temporary fix we can hack into the game, since the combat engine is closed off from us.

/quote

hey why can't I make this sticky??? could someone please make this sticky???

Yes that's been true since the beginning. Even if it did work properly you can hardly expect to "Defend someone to death" since you need to beat their attack by +10 to riposte.

I've always felt that Parry is one of the most useless skills in game. First I just thought it was because it was more or less impossible to score a successful riposite, now it shows it's bugged too? Oh my.

With a level 20 character who focused all his possible Skill Points into Parry, with a 30 Dexterity, Skill Focus in Parry, Greater Gloves of Swordplay and 2 Shimmering Scimitars, it would be almost impossible (only on a roll of 20) for anything with an attack of less than 33 to hit you.

And you'd get a riposite attack about 50% of the time even if they *did* have an attack of 33.

Yeah, man, that just sucks.

Am I wrong?

The riposte attacks are no problem, you get them all the time if you have a high dex char specialised on Parry. Problem is the above bug and the fact that you can't hit shit with a dex based fighter on Dyso as long as you don't get xd6 sneak bonus, cause everyone has 20/- damage reduction for everything, and probably a few points regen too cussing.gif

can we change the parry script to total defense action, where we just add +4 AC? like REAL D&D? It was so much more useful than parry with that anyhow... so ery useful...

Okay:

Maxed out Dex Modifier of 34-35 = +12
Skill Ranks = +23
Skill Focus Parry = +3
Improved Parry feat = +4
Max Misc Parry bonuses from items = +20-30 (was 30 but bioware may have fixed it back to 20)

Total = 62-72 icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

If parry did manage to get fixed, you would end up with untouchable-in-combat characters. So thank your lucky stars it's bugged. icon_razz.gif

parry always works fine for me in any LV pvp server i ever played, i made a test elf monk once with high insane parry and it actually did fairly decent with a perfect 60 ac except well, i died easily anyway as i had only 220 hp something and everyone had a 39 ab (highest possible legitly) even at that they hit me for about 5k or so,,,, lol.... parry works fine with dw or even a single blade, i tested it out in dm mode, i had a -1 ac and 127 parry, was very cool, none of my uber monsters could touch me with a 90 ab when i set my ab WAY high so i could get max attacks, rocked out... lol...

It'd be cool if there were swordlocks like saberlocks in Jedi Knight 2. The one with the highest roll would push the other one down and that person would be knocked down for 1 round, or whatever.

Parry aint that bad, it just needs a fix. I mean if you would play a 100% passive person you could parry all the persons attacks. That'd be cool! Lol I'm rambling again icon_eek.gif

Well, actually, parry has a valid use and I'll give you a short tip on how it's most effective.

Let's say you and a friend are playing together, you're playing a monk and your pal is playing a rogue, well you both have the parry skill when some jerk off comes alone and decides to PK you, he decides to attack you (the monk) and starts wacking, you have a good ac but a low ab so you go into parry, he is blocked from hitting you and you cant really do any damage to hurt him back, at this point your rogue friend materializes behind him and kills him with some very deadly sneak attacks, when he is dead you both PP him once and he respawns, then you don't see him again, that my friend is one example of how parry can be used to a tactical advantage.
